Role Overview Fivetran is tasked with developing data pipelines to support the modern data stack for a multitude of companies. We are on the hunt for a Principal Software Engineer to contribute to the technical architecture, design, and development of Fivetran’s Managed Data Lake product. As part of a senior engineering team, you will collaborate with product and engineering teams to build scalable and high-performance systems, advance open-source technologies, and set technical standards that elevate the entire organization. This is a full-time remote position based in Germany. Technologies You’ll Utilize

* Java, C++, Postgres, Temporal, gRPC

* AWS, GCP, Azure, Kubernetes, Grafana

* Iceberg, Polaris, Delta Lake, Parquet, DuckDB

Your Responsibilities

* Work closely with product teams to understand requirements and design innovative new capabilities directly for our customers.

* Design, develop, implement, and operate large-scale, highly reliable data lake systems in collaboration with a dedicated data lake engineering team.

* Contribute to open-source projects such as DuckDB and Polaris.

* Leverage Fivetran’s innovations with open-source standards and tools.

* Analyze and resolve fault-tolerance, high availability, performance, and scalability issues.

* Ensure the operational excellence of services, meeting commitments to our customers on security, reliability, availability, and performance.

* Set technical directions and influence cross-functional teams.

Skills We’re Seeking

* At least 6 years of hands-on or research experience with high-performance relational data management systems.

* A deep understanding of infrastructure and software optimizations, and performance engineering to significantly improve performance, latency, and availability.

* A proven history of leading and delivering large and complex projects.

* Strong development skills in Java and C++.

* Experience with public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP).

* A solid understanding of columnar storage formats.

* A growth mindset and enthusiasm for innovating by seeking new solutions.

* Excellent teamwork and a consistent effort to improve the performance of your colleagues.

Bonus Skills

* Preference for an MS or PhD in Computer Science, ideally with a focus on database management and/or storage engines.
