The Position 🚀
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer who excels in autonomous environments and relishes in delivering impactful, end-to-end outcomes. This role is perfect for engineers who thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous settings and are eager to launch production-ready solutions swiftly.
You will collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering teams to tackle complex issues that directly impact Carrot members, customers, and business performance. Additionally, you will contribute to our efforts in leveraging AI-assisted development to enhance our engineering processes.
Key Responsibilities 💼
- Act as the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI) for high-stakes projects. From inception to delivery, handle problems ranging from product roadmaps to member pain points, or partner integrations, ensuring a seamless end-to-end process.
- Embrace flexibility. Carrot aims to be adaptable to the needs of the market, customers, and members. Your engineering practices should reflect this. When breaking down tasks or sequencing changes, prioritize incremental value delivery to unlock business and user benefits.
- Make informed technical decisions. Balance speed against durability, and be prepared to live with the outcomes. In contentious situations, drive to a decision rather than waiting for consensus.
- Ensure system reliability. Be accountable for the reliability, observability, and incident response in your area of responsibility.
- Leverage AI effectively. You will bring a strong, specific perspective on AI tools and their application to accelerate work. You will also set a high standard for how the organization uses these tools.
- Mentor and elevate the team. Through pairing, code reviews, and guiding less-experienced engineers, you will help them become DRIs. Indirectly, you will raise the overall team's performance through your high standards and collaborative approach.
- Measure success. Every initiative should align with a member metric, cost target, reliability goal, or revenue lever. Clearly articulate your objectives and success criteria before starting, and challenge initiatives that cannot define these outcomes.
Engineering at Carrot Carrot's engineering team is structured around a few core principles: AI has transformed what a small team can accomplish. Act with urgency. Own your outcomes. What used to require a full team a quarter can now be achieved by a smaller group in just a few weeks, provided they know how to utilize AI tools and make decisions based on product context. We operate on this principle not as an experiment but as our standard mode of operation.
Specifically, this means:
- Small, focused teams with clear DRIs. We work in small, specialized teams where one product manager or engineer is the DRI. They own the outcome, drive the decisions, and are accountable for both success and failure.
- Set the pace. You will set the tempo, not follow it. If a review is overdue, you should push it forward. If a decision is stalled, you should force it to a resolution. If the team is moving slower than necessary, you should identify the issue and address it.
- Protect focus. Disciplined focus is crucial. When interruptions occur, whether from alerts, recurring questions from other teams, manual steps, or Slack notifications that should be documented, you should fix the root cause to prevent future occurrences.
- AI is integral. We are not exploring AI; we are using it in critical workflows. You will build leverage with these tools week over week.
- Accountability for outcomes. "Done" is measured by real-world impact on members and the business. We trust engineers to make local decisions, but we hold them accountable for the results.
About You ✨
This role is designed for individuals who possess the following traits:
- High autonomy. You operate in imperfect conditions, thrive in ambiguity, and have a track record of making progress in the face of incomplete information or unclear ownership.
- Prioritize delivery. Your focus is on delivering quality work quickly rather than perfecting every detail. We aim to balance quality with speed.
- Quick decision-making. We value decisiveness over consensus. You will often work in low-information environments and will be empowered to make decisions. Collaborate with others when needed, but do not over-engineer solutions.
- High standards. You set and meet high expectations, both for yourself and your peers. You provide and receive specific, constructive feedback, and you address issues proactively.
- Experience in software engineering. You have at least 5 years of experience leading end-to-end initiatives and have been the DRI in previous roles.
- Comfort with AI. You are proficient with AI tools like Codex, Claude Code, or similar, and you have practical experience with their limitations and benefits.
- Technical proficiency. You have strong fundamentals in our stack or adjacent technologies, such as C#/.NET, TypeScript, React, SQL, distributed systems, and cloud infrastructure (Azure and AWS).
- Influence beyond authority. You can align product, design, and other teams without formal power. Your technical leadership is respected because you have earned it.
- You mentor others. You provide guidance and feedback that helps others improve, even when not formally requested.
- Healthcare experience is a plus, but not required.
