We are currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer for our Web Engineering team to enhance best practices across the team, contribute innovative ideas to technical discussions, and identify and communicate project risks. We value transparency, intellectual honesty, and collaboration. As a Senior Software Engineer at Canonical, you will lead the development of large-scale projects. You will promote robust and efficient engineering practices, draft clear specifications, and mitigate risks. You will also be capable of taking on technical leadership roles to see projects through to completion. You will stay informed about industry trends and new technologies, and represent your team as a subject matter expert with credibility across the organization. As an exemplary engineer, you will mentor and develop your peers in a structured manner, sharing responsibilities for your team with your manager. Location: This role is remote, with a focus on the EMEA region. The role involves
* Prioritizing and driving initiatives that improve team performance
* Designing and implementing well-tested and documented software
* Troubleshooting and resolving issues reported by users
* Leading code and architectural reviews to maintain high standards
* Contributing to technical documentation to elevate its quality
* Identifying and implementing improvements to engineering and operations practices
* Deploying and operating services developed by the team
* Advocating for your product through technical expertise and insights
What we seek in you
* Defining and maintaining technical quality standards by shaping the architectural approach to support business goals
* Demonstrating strong soft skills, being passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated
* An impressive academic background, either from a Computer Science or STEM degree, or a compelling alternative path
* A history of exceeding expectations and a strong drive to excel
* Organized, proactive, and capable of meeting deadlines
* Skilled in researching and integrating new technologies into projects
* Providing thorough and insightful code reviews for any project component
* A focus on accessibility and performance
* Fluent in professional written and spoken English
* Experience with Linux, particularly Debian or Ubuntu
* Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
* Strong communication and presentation skills
* Goal-oriented, with a personal commitment to meeting commitments
* Willingness to travel twice a year for up to two weeks each to attend company events
Desirable skills
* Experience with container technologies such as LXD, Docker, and Kubernetes
* Experience in nurturing and maintaining a talented team by defining excellence
* Expertise in REST API design, development, and governance
* Commitment to delivering performance engineering and security experience
