Cable Theft Suspect Held After 30-Minute Highway Chase
Kuala Lumpur police fired at the tyres of a green Ford Ranger before the driver lost control and hit a Mazda in Sri Petaling.
The Chase
Police in Kuala Lumpur arrested a 29 year old local man suspected of stealing cable after a car chase that lasted about 30 minutes and ended when his vehicle crashed into another car.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said officers from the Bukit Aman highway traffic patrol spotted a green Ford Ranger behaving suspiciously on the Shah Alam Expressway, known as KESAS. Harian Metro reported that two people were inside the vehicle.
Officers signalled the driver to stop for a check. Instead the vehicle accelerated away, and police pursued it from the Awan Besar toll plaza in the direction of Klang, to the west, and on towards Jalan Hang Tuah 4 in Sri Petaling.
Shots Fired and the Crash
According to Fadil, one shot was fired at the tyres of the vehicle during the pursuit. The Ford Ranger stopped briefly near a petrol station in Sungai Besi.
The man behind the wheel did not cooperate and tried to drive into officers on duty, Fadil said, which prompted police to fire further shots at the rear tyres. Sinar Harian reported the shots were aimed at the right rear tyre.
The vehicle then sped into Jalan Hang Tuah 4, lost control and struck a grey Mazda. Newswav and Sinar Harian both put the start of the incident at about 9.30 in the morning.
Arrest, Records and Charges
One local man aged 29 was detained at the scene. A second man, described by police as the driver of the vehicle, escaped and was still being hunted at the time of the statements.
A search of the vehicle turned up various items and tools believed to be used for stealing cable, along with cable believed to have been stolen. Checks showed the man in custody had 37 previous criminal records and was on the wanted list.
The case is being investigated under Sections 307, 427 and 379 of the Penal Code and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. A remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code was to be made the following day, which Sinar Harian gave as 1 September. Police asked anyone with information to contact the Brickfields district police headquarters. The sources do not say what charges, if any, have since been brought.
