Met Office Warns of Thunderstorms Across East of England
A yellow warning covers five counties on Saturday afternoon and evening, with up to 30mm of rain, hail and lightning forecast.
Yellow Warning for Five Counties
The Met Office, the United Kingdom's national weather service, has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms across parts of the East of England.
The warning runs from 12:00 BST until 21:00 on Saturday and covers Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Buckinghamshire.
"An area of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move across this region during the afternoon and early evening," the forecaster said.
Expected Hazards
Up to 30mm of rain is expected to fall across the region, with hail and lightning forecast as additional hazards, according to BBC News.
The Met Office warned there would "probably" be damage to buildings and some flooding. It added that some short-term loss of power and other services was likely.
The sources do not say how many people live in the affected area, or whether the warning is expected to be upgraded.
Flooding in the West Midlands
Separately, the BBC reports that flooding in the West Midlands entered a third day, with a Met Office thunderstorm warning in place for that region as well.
Fresh storms hit on Thursday evening, hours after it was confirmed that 55 properties had flooded in Birmingham. Problems from Wednesday onwards included evacuations of pubs, a closed theme park and a business that "lost everything".
In Wolverhampton, flooding linked to a burst main left Church Street in Bilston under water. West Midlands Fire Service arrived shortly after 03:30 BST on Friday and began unblocking drains, while police cordoned off the street.
Businesses and Repairs
A Severn Trent Water spokesperson said it was "really hard to say what caused" the burst, and that there was no time frame for repairs. The BBC reported it was not immediately clear whether recent heavy rain had contributed.
Dev Chand, who runs a catering trailer selling curries, said police had told him there was no access. "I didn't come in yesterday because of the weather, and obviously I've got a lot of [food] waste," he said.
The indoor market was confirmed fully operational after 09:00 BST, though customers must use access points other than Church Street. City of Wolverhampton Council leader Stephen Simkins said the flood could have a longer-term impact on business.
