The Role of a Community Engineer The Community team at Canonical supports and empowers community leaders and participants. Our role is to ensure that community processes are efficient and well-run, while working closely with Canonical teams. We do not directly engage in community work but facilitate it to enable ambitious community members to leverage Canonical’s work, thereby bringing their unique contributions to Ubuntu. You will contribute to the design, execution, and scaling of initiatives that promote a vibrant community.

This role is ideal for someone with a strong technical background and a deep passion for open source software and sustainable community development.

Your responsibilities as a Community Engineer will include supporting community initiatives using your technical and organizational skills. You will collaborate with developers to streamline processes and align community plans with Canonical plans for maximum impact. You will foster the creation of new technical projects that enhance the community contribution experience and advocate for community interests with Canonical teams. You will lead multifaceted, cross-disciplinary programs from inception to launch, working closely with various teams such as Developer Relations, technical authors, product managers, marketing, engineering, and external partners.

You will engage with volunteer developers in the Ubuntu community, address their concerns, and help them achieve their goals. You will ensure the community remains engaged and informed through regular content, including blog posts and social media updates about community initiatives, events, and collaborative efforts with Canonical.

You will represent the Ubuntu community and Canonical in technical community projects and at conferences, maintaining clear communication with developers and software engineers. Our team regularly participates in conferences and expos to discuss technical community projects and their development processes.

This position is fully remote, with opportunities for travel to internal and external events 2 to 4 weeks per year. You can also opt for more travel if desired.

Your daily responsibilities will include:

- Crafting high-quality content to support community initiatives - Collaborating on solutions to community challenges - Working from home with the possibility of global travel - Fostering community contributions to Ubuntu - Engaging with the Ubuntu community through various channels such as Discourse, Matrix, social media, and conferences - Representing Ubuntu through speaking engagements at events and conferences - Supporting Canonical teams in their interactions with the open source ecosystem

We seek candidates who are:

- Passionate about technology and working with talented individuals - Curious, adaptable, articulate, and accountable - Valuing soft skills and being passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated - Experienced with developer tools and open source projects - Contributing to public records of accomplishments such as talks, blog posts, GitHub contributions, etc. - Familiar with aspects of Ubuntu Linux, DevOps, software development, testing, package management, or container technology - Capable of working independently and taking full ownership of objectives - Flexible with your schedule and enjoy working with new technology in a fast-paced environment - Experienced in working with open source communities and understanding the workflow of volunteer contributors - Skilled in program management with strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Additional qualifications that may be beneficial include:

- Experience in community management - Background in developer advocacy - Previous experience as a software developer - Contributions to the Ubuntu Community - Experience contributing to open source projects
