About this job
Canonical is a pioneering provider of open-source software and operating systems, serving a wide array of global enterprises and technology sectors. Our flagship product, Ubuntu, is extensively utilized in cutting-edge enterprise projects, including public cloud services, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering innovation, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Our client base comprises leading public cloud and semiconductor providers, as well as industry leaders across various sectors. The company is known for its global distributed collaboration, with a team of over 1200 colleagues across 75+ countries, and minimal reliance on traditional office settings. Team gatherings are held twice to four times a year, in diverse and engaging locations around the world, to ensure alignment on strategic and operational goals.
Canonical is a profitable, founder-led company with robust growth. We are currently seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer / GitOps Engineer to join our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an experienced technologist who is passionate about automation and Linux, eager to contribute to Canonical’s success through the use of Ubuntu and open-source software. If you have a background in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a strong commitment to technology, you will thrive in our dynamic environment at Canonical.
Job Summary The IS team at Canonical is responsible for the support and maintenance of all of Canonical’s IT production services. Our team manages services utilized by over 60 million Ubuntu users.
As a Senior SRE & GitOps Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our operations automation, both in our private clouds and in the public cloud. This involves leveraging the best open-source infrastructure as code tools, implementing CI/CD pipelines, and enhancing Canonical’s software operation automation with our leading products.
In addition to defining infrastructure as code, you will provide critical feedback to developers on the operational aspects of their products at scale. This includes submitting bug reports and writing pull requests, as well as collaborating with other teams to refine designs and implementations.
You will be part of a global SRE team that collaborates and supports each other to deliver the highest quality services to Canonical, its customers, and the Ubuntu community.
As a Senior Site Reliability / GitOps Engineer, you will:
- Lead the development of automation and GitOps practices within your team - Collaborate closely with the IS architect to align your solutions with the IS architecture vision - Design and architect services that the IS team can offer to the organization as products - Utilize Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to develop and improve automation and IaC processes - Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across private and public clouds, considering the complexities of distributed systems - Maintain operational responsibility for all of Canonical’s core services, networks, and infrastructure - Develop skills in troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance investigation, including setting up, maintaining, and using observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch - Design, implement, and maintain monitoring and alerting for various systems and services - Provide support and collaborate with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support peers - Enjoy uninterrupted development time to focus on larger projects and automation of manual tasks - Share your experience, knowledge, and best practices with other team members in design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work - Bear final responsibility for time-critical escalations
What We Are Looking For
- A modern view of hosting architecture, driven by infrastructure as code across both private and public clouds - A product mindset focused on developing products rather than solutions - Extensive Python software development experience, particularly in large projects - Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems - Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure with code - Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls - Familiarity with various forms of Linux storage, including Ceph and databases - Hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux servers - Deep understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies - A bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in computer science or a related engineering field - Clear and effective communication in English, both in writing and speaking - Motivation and the ability to troubleshoot from kernel to web, and a willingness to seek help when necessary - A willingness to be flexible and quickly learn new things - A passion for open-source, especially Ubuntu or Debian
What We Offer
- A flexible, distributed work environment with team sprints held in person twice a year - A personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year - Annual compensation reviews - Recognition and rewards programs - Generous annual holiday leave - Maternity and paternity leave - A Team Member Assistance Program and wellness platform - Opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues - Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events
