Materials Science Consultant Hourly Rate: $80-$130 Work Location: Global, fully remote Contract Duration: Approximately 15 hours per week Work Schedule: Flexible—choose your working hours and days, including weekends if desired We seek a highly experienced Materials Science Consultant to assist with an AI training project focusing on computational materials science, materials modeling, scientific simulations, and Python programming. The role involves solving, validating, and reviewing engineering tasks related to material structures, properties, processing, performance, and failure. A typical task might include building a material or atomic model, configuring and running a simulation, calculating relevant properties, analyzing the results, and ensuring the solution is both computationally valid and physically meaningful. This position demands both extensive materials expertise and proficiency in using engineering or scientific tools programmatically. Experience limited to graphical user interfaces alone is insufficient, as task solutions must be reproducible through code, scripts, configuration files, or command-line tools. Your Responsibilities

- Resolve and validate computational materials science and engineering challenges. - Design and prepare material structures, atomic configurations, and solver-ready inputs. - Model the relationships between composition, structure, processing, properties, and performance. - Execute atomistic, electronic-structure, molecular-dynamics, continuum, electrochemical, or related simulations. - Utilize Python to create inputs, automate calculations, conduct parameter sweeps, process data, and confirm results. - Examine mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, structural, or electrochemical characteristics. - Identify and address calculation errors, invalid structures, convergence issues, numerical instability, and incorrect physical assumptions. - Compare computational outcomes with experimental data, literature values, known properties, or expected physical trends. - Scrutinize AI-generated solutions for scientific accuracy and detect flawed assumptions, configurations, or conclusions. - Establish reproducible reference solutions and objective verification methods.

Qualifications

- A Master’s or Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, or a closely related field; or - A Master’s or Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with significant materials specialization. - Deep knowledge of materials behavior and pertinent structure-property relationships. - Extensive experience with computational materials modeling, simulation, characterization, or materials-focused engineering analysis. - Proficient use of Python. - Experience with at least one engineering or scientific tool that can be operated through a command line, scripting interface, configuration files, or programmatic API. - Ability to comprehend and justify modeling assumptions, parameters, approximations, and convergence criteria. - Skill in discerning computational failures from genuine physical behavior. - Capacity to articulate complex scientific reasoning and technical limitations clearly.

Potential Tools

- LAMMPS, ASE, pymatgen, Quantum ESPRESSO, FEniCSx, CalculiX, Elmer, PyBaMM, or similar software. - NumPy, SciPy, pandas, Matplotlib, Jupyter, atomistic modeling packages, materials informatics libraries, or domain-specific scientific tools. - Relevant experience may be from academic research, national labs, industry R&D, computational engineering, or other related work.
