The ideal candidate will spearhead efforts to critically assess and enhance the Rangeland Analysis Platform (RAP) production model, including the MOD17 algorithm, field observations, and eddy flux data. Opportunities also exist to utilize RAP production data in grazing management practices. This role offers significant intellectual freedom and the chance to innovate at the intersection of rangeland ecology and management, remote sensing, and earth systems modeling. Analyze and identify limitations and uncertainties in current RAP production estimates, particularly focusing on rangeland systems. Scrutinize production algorithm assumptions, inputs, and parameterizations to better reflect ecosystem processes in water-limited environments. Combine field observations, flux tower data, and remote sensing products to refine plant production models. Assess uncertainty in RAP and incorporate it into decision-making processes. Develop applications of RAP production data for grazing management. Engage in collaborative work with a multidisciplinary team of ecologists, remote sensing scientists, and land managers. Communicate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and stakeholder interactions. Qualifications Required Education and Experience: Associate's Degree plus 11 years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's Degree plus 9 years of relevant experience. A Master's degree or higher is preferred. Equivalent Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: - PhD in Biology, Ecology, Rangeland Science, or related fields. - Experience with satellite-based remote sensing products. - Familiarity with plant production modeling, eddy flux data, or earth systems modeling. - Experience conducting independent, innovative research. - Experience leading the publication and presentation of research results in top-tier journals/conferences in the areas of vegetation production, rangeland management, and/or remote sensing. - Experience working with ranchers and land managers to apply remote sensing tools to land management. - Extensive experience developing operational data products based on remote sensing. - Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. - Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Java, JavaScript, Python. - Experience working with cloud services like AWS, Azure, or GCP. Special Certification/Licensure: Working Conditions and Physical Effort Environment: Moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Physical Effort: Light physical effort, applying to no more than two (2) hours per day.
