About this job

Role Title: Materials Science Specialist Role Type: Freelance Location: Flexible

micro1 is seeking Materials Science Specialists to collaborate on a project that aims to enhance the capabilities of AI in materials engineering. In this role, you will leverage your expertise to refine and improve AI models. Your contributions will influence the way AI systems learn, reason, and perform by providing high-quality, real-world data. No previous experience in AI is necessary; what we need is your deep understanding of materials science. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of engineering by ensuring AI can accurately interpret and solve complex materials challenges, including selection, failure analysis, testing, and process development. We are looking for experts who are meticulous, detail-oriented, and skilled communicators.

Scope of Work

- Assess and solve complex materials science and engineering problems, covering topics such as materials selection, failure analysis, testing, and process development. - Evaluate and critique AI-generated technical content for accuracy and engineering quality. - Utilize practical engineering judgment to address real-world materials selection and failure scenarios, as well as theoretical questions. - Use industry-standard techniques such as microstructural analysis, fractography, mechanical testing, and thermodynamic modeling to analyze and troubleshoot materials issues. - Share your domain expertise to guide improvements in AI reasoning and modeling in materials science and engineering. - Document your feedback and provide clear explanations in both written and verbal forms to enhance AI learning and performance. - Collaborate with a diverse team of experts and project participants in a remote setting.

Preferred Qualifications

- A bachelor’s degree or higher in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, or ME/ChemE with a materials focus. - At least 3 years of hands-on experience in materials selection, failure analysis, testing, or process development. - In-depth knowledge of material classes (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites), microstructure-property relationships, and failure mechanisms. - A proven track record in analyzing root-cause failures through fractography, metallography, and mechanical/thermal test data. - Familiarity with relevant standards organizations (ASTM, ASM, ISO materials standards) and process qualification requirements. - Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal. - Experience with materials characterization equipment (SEM, XRD, TEM, DSC/TGA) or process development in a manufacturing setting is beneficial. - Highly preferred: experience in problem-authoring, such as serving on an Olympiad problem committee, authoring a textbook problem set, contributing to NCEES or academic qualifying exams, participating in ASTM, ASM, or ISO materials standards committees, leading a team in the TMS Materials Bowl, ASM International undergraduate design competition, or earning an MRS student award, receiving a best-paper award at TMS Annual Meeting, MS&T, or MRS, or publishing in Acta Materialia / Nature Materials, receiving an Acta Materialia Silver Medal, or securing a prestigious fellowship/grant (NSF CAREER, DOE Early Career, Sloan Fellowship), or achieving TMS Young Leader or MRS Outstanding Young Investigator recognition.

Compensation and Timeline

- Compensation is based on output, with experts being paid for tasks that meet project specifications. The workload may vary based on your experience and workflow. - Minimum submission requirements apply, and experts must commit to completing a certain number of tasks per week. - We typically fill roles within 48 hours and are actively seeking candidates who can start their tasks within 24-48 hours after completing onboarding.
