DevOps Engineer (Intern) - IT and programming, remote

Mactores is hiring a DevOps Engineer (Intern) - a junior role, which makes it one of the rarer ways into the international market. The role sits in IT and programming and is fully remote. The company places no restriction on where the candidate lives, so you can apply from anywhere.

The advert singles out AWS, so experience with that one tool is what will decide it.

The employer did not publish a figure; that is settled at interview. The advert sets no condition on working hours.

This vacancy passed an automated check: the list excludes any advert requiring a foreign work permit, visa sponsorship, a particular citizenship, or residence in a specific country.

About this job

Mactores specializes in transforming businesses with AWS-native modernization services. Many modernization projects fail to see the light of day, often getting stuck in pilot phases, delayed by a year, or costing significantly more than anticipated. Our mission is to ensure successful deployment, with legacy systems retired and measurable outcomes. We leverage Aedeon, the agent platform developed by our sister company, to streamline repetitive tasks such as discovery, dependency mapping, and validation. Our team of forward-deployed engineers focuses on critical decision-making and cutover activities, adhering to deadlines defined in our contracts.

Modernization is only meaningful when the new system is live and the old system is decommissioned, with DevOps teams leading the charge. As a DevOps Engineer intern, you will work closely with our deployment team, managing large-scale customer projects involving Linux and Windows administration, complex enterprise applications, and big data workloads. This role is integral to our efforts in migrating customers from dedicated hardware to the AWS cloud.

During your internship, you will focus on hands-on operational tasks rather than taking on major cutover responsibilities. You will be responsible for managing operational tickets, developing automation workflows, and supporting release deployments. Key areas of focus include:

- Collaborating with the Engineering team to implement large-scale changes for customers. - Automating operational and server provisioning using AWS CloudFormation templates. - Sharing responsibilities for deploying releases and maintaining operational infrastructure. - Enhancing our Jenkins clusters, Bitbucket, monitoring tools (Consul), and metrics tools (Graphite and Grafana). - Providing operational support to the broader Engineering team. - Contributing to the migration of our remaining hardware infrastructure to the cloud, ensuring a smooth transition.

To succeed in this role, you should have:

- A foundational understanding of version control systems (git), including branching and merging strategies. - Basic knowledge of cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, and GCP. - Familiarity with Snowflake. - Experience with software build tools (Maven, Gradle) and continuous integration tools (Jenkins), particularly in a Java-based environment. - Proficiency in Linux environments and scripting languages such as bash, Python, and Groovy.

At Mactores, we believe in fostering a culture that empowers every team member. Our 10 Core Leadership Principles, which emphasize decision-making, leadership, collaboration, and curiosity, guide our operations.

1. Stay ahead of the curve. 2. Strive for excellence. 3. Embrace challenges. 4. Pay attention to detail. 5. Thrive on challenges. 6. Be inquisitive and take action. 7. Lead by example. 8. Take ownership. 9. Deliver value. 10. Foster collaboration.

Our recruitment process consists of three stages:

1. Pre-Employment Assessment: Technical evaluations to assess your suitability for the role. 2. Managerial Interview: In-depth discussions with the hiring manager covering technical skills, hands-on experience, leadership potential, and communication. 3. HR Discussion: A 30-minute session with the HR team to discuss the offer and next steps.

Mactores is committed to providing equal opportunities in all employment practices. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital status, military status, genetic information, or any other category protected by federal, state, and local laws. This commitment applies to all aspects of the employment relationship, including recruitment, compensation, promotions, transfers, disciplinary action, layoffs, training, and social and recreational programs.

To expedite the hiring process, please ensure your application is comprehensive.
